The Sankofa, a mythological African bird, faces backward but flies forward. It serves as a metaphor for looking to the past to find the way forward. It is an ancient Adinkra symbol and the word SANKOFA is taken from the language spoken in Ghana. SAN means 'again', KO means 'go', and FA means 'take'. It is a symbol of great importance in regards to learning from the past.
